  16. Important Note:
  17. Before updating Portfolio to version 5.0.1, you must first
  18. uninstall Portfolio 5.0. You may do this be either running
  19. the 5.0.1 installer, or by using the add-remove control panel.
  20. When Portfolio has been uninstalled, proceed with the 5.0.1
  21. installation.

  23. After installing Portfolio 5.0.1, you will need to repersonalize
  24. your copy of Portfolio. If you cannot locate your serial
  25. number, please contact Extensis Tech Support at (503)274-7030 or
  26. support@extensis.com.

  29. Portfolio, right-click on Portfolio.exe, and view

  97.  - Speed issues with document text indexing for supported file
  98.    types have been addressed.
  99.  
  100.  - Some printing issues have been resolved:
  101.     - Mac users are now able to print in landscape mode.
  102.     - Printing large catalogs using the Actual Images print option
  103.       on Mac will result in correct output.
  104.  
  105.  - Cross platform search functionality has been improved.
  106.  
  107.  - There have been some improvements to the PostScript translator,
  108.    including better handling of Bezier curves.
  109.  
  110.  - Executing the Open server AppleScript command will no longer
  111.    fail.

  113.  - When exporting HTML, the file names of the created images now
  114.    include the filename as well as the Record ID number.  For
  115.    example, the image file created from an original file named
  116.    sample.tif becomes sample50.jpg rather than t0000050.jpg.

  164. 5. Serializing and Registering Portfolio
  165.  
  166. After launching Portfolio 5.0.1, you will be prompted to serialize
  167. and register the software. Please enter the serial number located
  168. inside the product packaging.  If you have not purchased a serial
  169. number for Portfolio, you can run it as a full-functioning demo for
  170. 30 days. After this period expires, Portfolio will convert into a
  171. Browser version.  This version only allows read-only operations, so
  172. you will not be able to create catalogs or add items to catalogs.
  173. Additionally, the Browser only operates in a single-user setting,
  174. so you will be locked out of any networked catalog that another
  175. user is accessing. If you do access a networked catalog, all other
  176. users will be locked out of that catalog until you close the
  177. catalog.
  178.  
  179. Using the Uninstall utility (Windows only):
  180. In order to remove Portfolio you will need to run the Add/Remove
  181. Programs option from the Control Panel.
  182.  
  183. Please note: Microtek scanners may interfere with the built-in
  184. electronic registration process. If you are using a Microtek
  185. scanner, please turn it off before attempting to register
  186. Portfolio 5.0.1 You may turn the scanner back on once the
  187. registration process is complete.

  189. 6. Software Technical Notes
  190.  - Translators for some of the file types not currently supported
  191.    will be offered for free download as they become available.
  192.    Registering your copy of Portfolio 5.0.1 will assure that you
  193.    will be notified when these translators are available.
  194.  
  195.  - PowerPoint - The current PowerPoint translator is unable to
  196.    extract text information from the files for use in document text
  197.    indexing.  Therefore text within PowerPoint files cannot be
  198.    searched at this time.
  199.  
  200.  - Some Tiff images with alpha channels may not preview correctly
  201.    on the Windows platform.
  202.  
  203.  - Text Block fields (such as the Description field) are indexed
  204.    one word at a time; phrase searches will always fail on Windows.
  205.    When Portfolio 4.0 string fields (like Description or large
  206.    custom string fields) are converted to Text Block fields they
  207.    will still be indexed in the old fashion if they were indexed in
  208.    Portfolio 4.0: phrases entered into old or new records will
  209.    still be found by searches.
  210.  
  211.  - QuickTime is used on both Mac and Windows to translate a number
  212.    of raster image and multimedia formats.  As a result, we
  213.    strongly recommend you install QuickTime 4.1.1. The installers
  214.    for both platforms are available on the Extensis CD. 
  215.  
  216.  - Portfolio 5.0.1  Macintosh will conflict with Kaleidoscope 2.0.
  217.    The only workaround at the present time is to disable
  218.    Kaleidoscope.
  219.  
  220.  - On the Mac, Portfolio uses Internet Config to determine how to
  221.    handle various URL types that are entered into URL fields.
  222.    Internet Config is installed as part of your OS.  If Internet
  223.    Config is not installed or is configured incorrectly, URL links
  224.    in Portfolio may not work or may produce unexpected results.

  226. 7. Manual Addenda
  227.  
  228. Categories can only be created while in Administrator mode.  Path
  229. as Categories option is only available in Admin mode.
  230.  - Creating categories during a background cataloging operation
  231.    behaves differently between platforms. With a catalog open in
  232.    Administrative mode, Background Cataloging automations have the
  233.    following behavior:
  234.     - On Windows, silent Background Cataloging automations do
  235.           not add the path as Categories in Administrative mode,
  236.           while on the Mac they do.
  237.     - Non-silent Background Cataloging automations on Windows
  238.           will add categories for only the first directory that
  239.           contains files. Files in lower directories in the
  240.           hierarchy are not applied to any category when they are
  241.           added. This continues each time the Background Cataloging
  242.           automation finds new files in the Watch folder, and adds
  243.           new records. By contrast, the Mac applies any records
  244.           added via Background Cataloging to their proper
  245.           categories (as long as the catalog remains in
  246.           Administrative mode and the Cataloging Options remain the
  247.           same).
  248.     - Categories can only be created in Administrator mode.
  249.           Items can be applied to existing categories in any access
  250.           mode other than Reader mode. This applies to both
  251.           platforms.
  252.  
  253. If you are using Windows Background cataloging and wish to
  254. categorize your records, some confusion can be avoided by doing the
  255. following:
  256.  - Initially add the directory you wish to set as the Background
  257.    Cataloging Watch folder in Administrator mode in one of the
  258.    following ways:
  259.    (A) Set the Path as Categories to Selected Folders
  260.        and add the directory via regular cataloging methods; or
  261.    (B) Drag the folder you wish to set as the Background cataloging
  262.        Watch folder into the Categories palette. Either of these
  263.        methods will set up the directory structure as it appears on
  264.        disk inside the categories palette.  You can then set your
  265.        Background Cataloging automation to the desired directory.
  266.  - After setting up the directory structure, do one of the
  267.    following to prevent categories from being created by
  268.    cataloging:
  269.    (A) Background Cataloging automations use current Catalogiing
  270.        Options settings, reset the Path as Categories in the
  271.        General tab of the Cataloging Options to None; or
  272.    (B) Since categories are not created at all during silent
  273.        background cataloging on Windows, set the Background
  274.        Cataloging automation to run in silent mode; or
  275.    (C) Since categories can only be created in Administrator mode,
  276.        switch access modes to Publisher or below before running
  277.        Background Cataloging automations.
  278.  - Finally, you will need to make sure to assign any additional
  279.    items added via Background Cataloging after completing the first
  280.    step to their proper categories. This can be done in any access
  281.    mode greater than Reader mode.
